The Cal men’s tennis squad concluded its run at the NCAA Championships on Thursday when junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt fell in the first round of the doubles tournament.
The Bears’ 23rd-ranked tandem lost 6-4, 7-5, to the No. 17 duo of Sekou Bangoura Jr. and Alexander Lacroix from Florida at Stanford’s Taube Family Tennis Center. Konigsfeldt and Andrews end the season with an 7-2 record in tournament matches.
The Gators gained control of the match early on by breaking Konigsfeldt’s serve and taking the opening game. The Bears fought back and brought the score to a close 5-4, but they never gained a lead in the first set.
On serve in the second set, Cal took the first game and built up the score to 3-1 before the Gators gained momentum once more and tied the match at 3-3. Just as in the first set, the two teams traded games once more. Andrews and Konigsfeldt clung to a lead at 5-4, but in the end the Florida opponents walked off with a 7-5 win and a spot in the next round.
