Man arrested for alleged battery near People’s Park

One man was arrested after allegedly shooting another man with a BB gun in People’s Park on Sunday afternoon.

At about 2:16 p.m., UCPD received a call regarding a man who possibly had a gun in the park, according to UCPD Lt. Alex Yao.

Yao said the victim had run to the park after he was approached and surrounded on the corner of Haste Street and Telegraph Avenue by the suspect — whom a UCPD crime alert identified as Michael-James Kifayat Ali, 22 — and two other juvenile suspects, who allegedly yelled a racial slur at the victim.

As the victim ran toward the park, Ali shot at him with an imitation weapon, which was subsequently found to be a BB gun, Yao said.

After stopping Ali on the south side of the park on Hillegass Avenue, UCPD arrested him and and took to the Berkeley Jail Facility for processing, according to Yao.

Yao said the two juvenile suspects were also detained for investigation. According to the alert, one juvenile suspect is 16 years of age and the other is 17 years of age.

Though the case occurred in the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Police Department and members of that department responded for assistance, Yao said UCPD took the case because it was the first department to arrive on scene.

No one was injured during the incident.
