State Controller John Chiang announced Tuesday that his office’s review of the state budget passed by the Democratic state legislature and vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown last week determined the budget’s spending plan was not balanced and incomplete, thereby forfeiting legislative pay.
Under Proposition 25, which was approved by voters Nov. 2, 2010, legislators’ pay and living expenses are forfeited each day beyond June 15 that a budget is not passed. Though the state legislature did approve a budget June 15 before the governor vetoed it the next day, Chiang’s analysis determined that “the numbers simply did not add up.”
“The Controller has made his determination,” Brown said in a statement. “We should all work together to pass a solid budget.”
