Lawrence Pitts, UC provost and executive vice president of academic affairs, announced Thursday he will retire in February.

Pitts was appointed interim provost in February 2009 and became the permanent provost in March 2010. As provost, Pitts oversaw academic affairs throughout the UC system, according to a press release issued Thursday morning by the UC Office of the President.

Pitts was a chair of the UC Academic Senate and professor emeritus of neurosurgery at UC San Francisco before assuming the position of provost.

The UC will begin looking for a replacement soon. Until a new provost has been found, Pitts will remain in his position.
