A man was robbed of $10 via knife near the People’s Park restrooms Tuesday night.
At about 9:55 p.m., a man was walking toward the men’s restroom in People’s Park when a suspect approached him out of the shadows, brandished a knife and demanded his money, according to UCPD spokesperson Lt. Marc DeCoulode.
After the two exchanged some words, the suspect threatened the victim with a knife, and the victim gave him money from his pocket, according to DeCoulode. The suspect then walked away, and UCPD arrived on scene within minutes after the incident occurred.
The suspect is a 6’ 4”, medium-built male and was last seen going into People’s Park wearing a black hoodie with white stripes on the arms, according to UCPD crime logs.
The victim, a 32-year old male from Pleasantville, was not injured. The case is currently under investigation, and there have been no arrests made yet.
DeCoulode said there have not been enough robberies in People’s Park lately to justify a trend but that safety in the park is a concern.
“We want to make sure our students are careful and aware when they are out at night,” he said. “They should remember to always walk in groups, especially at night.”

UCPD should have kept it as Ft. Defiance instead of bowing to the whims of a few wing nuts
So rather than doing anything about the obvious hazard that is the park, UCPD puts responsibility onto students to walk in groups when their residence halls are right around the corner. Classy.
A trend? There’s always robberies around People’s Park. What will Cal do about it? Nothing, of course.
Why should Cal have to do anything about it?
Every time they’ve tried to do something positive with the park, the homeless-enabling townies tear it up.
DeCoulode represents a new low for UCPD spokesperson.
The things he has to say are basically devoid of content.
It does seem like he tells fewer lies than other persons going on record for UCPD,
but that’s only because his job is to really say nothing at all.
Is he even a real person or just a barely passable computer program?

People’s Park so much a safety hazard as it is an episode of the Twilight Zone.
Safety in the park is always a concern.
Once again the Daily Cal refuses to identify the suspect’s race. Yay for political correctness!
Berkeleyside listed the race of the suspect, since it was included in the Police report:

Move UCPD headquarters to the park.
“UCPD says there have not been enough roberries in People’s Park lately to justify a trend?”
I find that hard to believe. Tear the place down and build student housing.
“Tear the place down and build student housing”
That was the plan fifty years ago. Circumstances intervened:

Seems like it’s high time they tried again.
After 40+ years of being a hell-hole, I doubt you’ll find as many people willing to support the “park” these days.
“I doubt you’ll find as many people”
Probably not. But the die-hards have no intention of giving up. They’ll push until the University has to use deadly force, and then they’ve won.
