Just a week after Berkeley City Manager Phil Kamlarz announced he would retire this year, the Berkeley City Council will convene in a closed session Monday night to appoint an acting city manager.

A few months after the acting manager fills the position, the council will evaluate their performance and at that point either make the appointment permanent or consider widening the search for a new manager.

Mayor Tom Bates said last week that he will recommend to the council that Deputy City Manager Christine Daniel be appointed interim city manager.

“We feel like we have a wonderful team that Phil has put together for us,” Bates said in an interview. “I think (Daniel) deserves the opportunity.”

Kamlarz, whose last day as city manager will be Nov. 30, has also recommended that the council appoint Daniel as his successor.

“I would especially like to recognize Christine Daniel as someone who embodies all the qualities necessary to lead the organization and address the challenges that are facing all cities, not only the City of Berkeley, in the upcoming years,” Kamlarz said in a Sept. 26 memo to the council.
