Women’s All American tournament update

The Cal women’s tennis team had mixed results in its first trip away from home to the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles.

Top-ranked player Jana Juricova came into the tournament as the top overall seed and won her first match over Anna Bartenstein of Miami (Fla.). However, Juricova required significant effort in a three-set win, which coach Amanda Augustus attributed to rust.

“The first day of a tournament is always tough, and there’s more pressure on the top seed,” Augustus said. “I have to give a lot of credit to her opponent – she forced Jana to make adjustments.”

Not all Bears achieved that level of success. Tayler Davis won in her first match, but in her second round match was bounced by Robin Anderson of UCLA, 6-3, 6-3.

Davis and teammate Annie Goransson lost their second round doubles match in the qualifying bracket, while Juricova and doubles partner Annett Schutting were upset in the first round of the doubles main draw.

Nonetheless, Juricova will resume her pursuit of the singles’ title tomorrow against conference rival Zoe Scandalis of USC.
