Forum to discuss social mobility through education at UC Berkeley

As part of an effort to increase discussion on the issues currently facing public higher education, the UC Berkeley Council of Deans will host a forum Tuesday to discuss social mobility in public universities.

The forum, organized by the council’s Task Force on the Future of Public Universities, will feature UC Berkeley professor of public policy Robert Reich, former Sacramento Bee editorial page editor Peter Schrag and PolicyLink founder and CEO Angela Glover Blackwell. It will occur between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union building’s Pauley Ballroom.

The speakers will focus on “Social Inequality and Social Opportunity,” according to an email sent to the campus community by the task force Oct. 20, because “the role of public university education as a pathway to upward mobility is of critical concern not only to the character of our university but also to the nation at large.”

“With the unprecedented disinvestment in public universities, access to higher education and ultimately the life chances of many Americans will be impacted,” the email states.

State funding for the University of California has plummeted in recent years, with $650 million in cuts already signed into law. A further $100 million could be cut from university funding if the state does not meet revenue collection targets.

UC Regent Chairwoman Lansing and President Yudof both agree
to discriminate against Californians for the admission of foreigners. Birgeneau,
