Berkeley feels more than 20 earthquakes since last Thursday

With the magnitude 3.6 quake in Berkeley Thursday morning, the city has now felt more than 20 earthquakes since last Thursday.

Between Oct. 20 and Oct. 27 — a little over a week — nine earthquakes have had epicenters in Berkeley, the first a magnitude 4.0 last Thursday around 2:30 p.m. and the most recent this morning just after 5:30 a.m.

At least 14 more not centered in Berkeley have been felt in the city, according to the U.S. Geological Survey response system that allows people to input if they felt a quake in their area.

Jack Boatwright, seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said the response system cannot be taken as fact.

“I’m glad we’re running the “Did You Feel It?” website … but there’s some information that one needs to be careful with,” he said.

The U.S.G.S. response system shows Berkeley residents feeling the effects of earthquakes as far away as Southern California.

Most recently, a 1.8 magnitude quake in central California Monday afternoon, a 3.0 magnitude quake in the Bay Area Wednesday afternoon, a 4.7 magnitude quake in Northern California Wednesday night, a 1.9 magnitude quake in Northern California early Thursday morning and a 2.0 magnitude quake in central California Thursday around 11 a.m. were all felt by Berkeley residents, according to the response system.

Between Oct. 13 and Oct. 19 — the preceding week — no earthquakes were felt in Berkeley, according to the response system.

Please let the next major earthquake aka THE BIG ONE of 5-9.0 magnitude be in Southern California.  May the quake gods spare Northern California it’s wrath.

With all these quakes maybe outside in tents is where God wants good folks to be.
