Berkeley begins week with two more earthquakes

Two more earthquakes rattled Berkeley Monday morning, bringing the total number of earthquakes the city has seen since Oct. 20 up to 16.

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake hit at 2:42 am Monday, followed by a magnitude 1.4 at 7:38 a.m.

Monday’s quakes come after a magnitude 1.7 quake that hit at 9:34 a.m Sunday, which had an epicenter under Memorial Stadium.

All three quakes caused weak shaking and no damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Although the recent earthquakes have ranged in magnitude from 1.0 to 4.0, all have been fairly similar, making this wave of earthquakes a “swarm,” as opposed to the typical main shock-after shock sequence, in which the first quake is larger than all those that follow.
