The Bay Area weekend in film

Tonight marks the beginning of another year of our of our lucky area’s favorite film festivals, Cinema by the Bay. This festival showcases the work of filmmakers, local and beyond, with a focus on the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of these films were shot and made here, and others have chosen SF as their subject matter. Cinema by the Bay commences tonight with Joshua Moore’s “I Think It’s Raining,” screening at the SF Film Society’s new home, the New People Cinema. For a complete roster of films, visit the festival site.

As I wrote in today’s paper, the PFA in Berkeley also begins screening its “Jeanne Moreau: Enduring Allure series.” Running through Decembet, this massive retrospective boasts 12 films starring the sly, svelte French actress who worked with such notable auteurs as Antonioni, Welles and Truffaut. Tomorrow night, the PFA will host a film especially close to my heart, Louis Malle’s 1958 “Elevator the Gallows.” This is Moreau’s breakout performance. It will be followed by Malle’s other 1958 film “The Lovers.”

On Saturday night at the PFA, Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Red Desert” (1964) is showing. This is a must for any fans of the mythic director, the beautiful Monica Vitti or films about women having mental breakdowns amid industrial landscapes — I’m convinced this is a genre, but I’ll let somebody else decide that.
