ASUC External Affairs Vice President Joey Freeman sent an email to the campus community inviting students to lobby with Student Regent Alfredo Mireles, Jr. in Sacramento in lieu of the UC Board of Regents, which was postponed due to threats to public safety. Buses that were originally going to take students to the meeting in San Francisco Wednesday were rerouted to Sacramento.
Read the message below:
To the Cal Community:
As many of you have likely heard, the UC Board of Regents cancelled its
meeting scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. However, we cannot and
will not allow this decision to impede upon our ongoing efforts to
protect and defend public higher education.Instead of sending students to the Regents meeting, we have rerouted
our buses to Sacramento because we know that when students show up in
our state’s capitol, legislators listen. Together with our Student
Regents and fellow UC students from across California, we will send a
powerful message to our legislators that they must reinvest in public
higher education. We need as many students as possible to join us in order for our message
to be effective. Please reserve your seat on the bus by going to
http://tinyurl.com/75vhxco. Buses will be departing from the corner of
Bancroft and Telegraph at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, November 16, 2011.Recent events on campus, including the November 9th Day of Action and
the Occupy Cal movement, have brought much needed attention to the
serious issues confronting our state. We are seeking to build upon this
momentum and address this crisis at its core. California has a revenue
problem – we simply don’t have enough money to fund all of the services
we care about, higher education being at the top of the list. On
Wednesday morning, we will demonstrate our commitment to public
education and demand new sources of revenue, including the reform of
Proposition 13.Since our previous email, we have received an overwhelming response from
students indicating a need for concrete ways to get involved. There is
no more concrete action than being present and heard in Sacramento.
Again, please join us and reserve your seat on the bus by going to
http://tinyurl.com/75vhxco. We look forward to updating you soon with
more opportunities to restore the promise of the UC system and ensure an
accessible and affordable higher education for all students.Looking forward to seeing you in Sacramento,
Joey Freeman Vishalli Loomba
