Man allegedly throws aluminum water bottle at UC Berkeley student’s face

A man allegedly threw an aluminum water bottle at a UC Berkeley student Thursday evening on campus, causing minor injuries to the victim’s face.

At about 5:09 p.m., the female student was approached by a man at “the northeast exterior of the Haas Pavilion,” according to a UCPD crime alert. The man asked the student if she was going to the protest on Sproul Plaza, and when the victim answered “no,” the suspect yelled at her.

“People like you are the reason that California is in debt,” he said, according to the crime alert.

The suspect then threw a full aluminum water bottle at the victim’s face, the crime alert said. The victim then called UCPD and refused medical treatment for the bruise on her cheek. UCPD officers responded to the scene and checked the area, but could not locate the suspect.

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic male in his early 20s, wearing a brown and green knit cap with earflaps and strings, a black coat and dark pants.

By dutifully reporting individual incidents but not reporting on the growing scope and size of Occupy Wall Street lawlessness, the MSM is willfully covering up the violence, vandalism, and anti-Semitism that truly does define this movement.

No one can accuse them of not reporting these incidents, but by choosing not to bring the pieces together, the MSM ensures the least amount of public relations damage is done to the Occupiers.
What I’ve collected below is far from comprehensive but still shows over 75 incidents of sexual assault, violence, vandalism, anti-Semitism, extortion, perversion, and lawlessness.
The MSM could easily tell the story of how this violence-prone movement is becoming an increasing threat to our society. After all, my research below is the result of nothing more than Twitter and Google. Among others, The New York Times, Washington Post, Politico, and the LA Times have willfully chosen not to use the resources at their disposal to give the public an honest look at this growing menace. In their partisan minds, truth doesn’t trump agenda.
What is true is that on October 18, pollster Doug Schoen (a Democrat!) discovered that a full 31% of Occupiers were willing to commit violence in pursuit of their agenda, whatever that is. From biggovernment.com

I saw a UCPD officer drive up (~5:15), park his car, and run across the front of the plaza. Maybe she made the story up, but then it would be a false report and she is a student so I don’t know what this has to do with what people “are fighting against.”
It’s not a particularly crowded spot on campus at that time of day, it’s fairly dark, and there are plenty of places to hide, so maybe it happened. If any proof comes forward, of course, you’ll then say that this person wasn’t a real occupy person, this doesn’t characterize the movement, etc….

I was hit in the back of the head with a full beer can on a major thorough-fair filled with people. The perps circled the block to come back and hit me in my face. I lost teeth. My only consolation was that I put out my cigarette on his bare chest, because the police did fuck all to charge the man, even though I got his licence plate #. Violence against women is so acceptable in our culture. It’s the number 1 way we keep women pliant and under the thumbs of stupid men like the one in your article.We need more women with guns, period. I am a supporter of the second amendment, but threatening use of firearms is rarely a good idea. Being able to defend one-self should the need arise (with whatever is needed) is a good idea. And that defense may be against a tyrannical gov’t as desired by the Occupiers (they just want tyrants who want to steal from others and give to them). So having some firearms and the ability to use them well is a good thing … talking about it openly ahead of its actual need can make you look a bit too much like a dangerous yee-ha than a person intent on legally defending what they’ve worked for.

Actually, the debt is because of neither of the above. The debt is because the politicians have no clue about what sovereign money is and not a single one of them demonstrates the ability to bring forth an innovative thought. Income taxes should go away for all “classes”, not be increased. The debt could be eliminated in 6 months to a year with just a small amount of innovation and a paradigm shift. Neither Tea Partiers nor OWS protesters seem to have gotten far enough through the manipulative fog to recognize the unlimited options that exist.

It would be more like a year, but the FairTax would solve the budget deficit problem in about a 12 months. Ending the National Debt would take till 2020 or so, but would be done without an increase in taxes or drastic reduction in spending.
If folks were willing to reduce spending to 2008 levels, it would take a couple years less. Once you understand the FairTax, you’ll demand it.

This is true, The Federal Goverenment is spending 40% more than it takes in (1.5 out of 4 trillion), To pay the debt down in eight years is another 2 trillion a year. I did construction and worked in a factory while I was in college. I’m also published in a scientific journal. So I have ‘produced’ things and I did my time doing that sort of stuff.
I have actually called people to tell them they are getting tens of thousands of dollars when they are hurt or their husband had motorcycle accident. I also helped a bunch of people before the 2010 crash to not loose their retirement by getting out of the market and into something safe. I consider those things to be productive.

In the 80′s tax rates were very high, which isn’t as true now (ever heard of the laffer curve?). Obviously revenues will increase the US came out of the 1970′s stagflation crisis right about then. Furthermore, inflation, population growth and increased productivity are also partly to blame for increasing revenue.
I am more interested in revenue as a percent of GDP as calculated in 1980. Saying revenue went up is meaningless outside of that frame of reference.

I was at occupy Boston. There is a kitchen area with a table full of food. People just walk up and eat whatever is on the table.
They have a lots of rice, beans, and potatoes. I also saw a few random middle class crunchy people stop by and drop off trays of brownies, salads, chicken and quinoa/tomatoe/cucumber salad. I was standing near the food table giving out DVDs about ending the fed and saw quite a few people do this. A local farmer is also shipping food in for free.

Simple, you grow the economy. The FairTax is based on GDP. With a GDP right now of about $15 trillion, the FairTax would raise about $3.4 trillion. Studies have shown that the FairTax, has it been passed on 2010, would have raised more money than the income tax. So, the FairTax at $3.4 trillion, or the income tax at $2.2 trillion
And since the FairTax would grow the economy much faster than the income tax, studies show, it would continue to raise substantially more each year. And the excess could be used to pay down the National Debt. All, and it is a big all, we have to do is get Congress to control spending at current levels or below. Otherwise, they can obviously spend faster than we can produce it, and no tax system at all can work.

1> How will the tax be applied in states like New Hampshire where they don’t have a state sales tax?
2> Will the tax be applied to the purchase of financial goods like stocks and options contracts? What about annuities and insurance?
3> How are the prebates handled? Do they send an identical check to every man woman and baby who registers? What stops people from not working and just collecting the check?
4> How would eBay, Craigslist, and garage sales be handled? Is a distinction made between new and used goods?

You are asking several good questions, and I might point you to our website, http://www.ohfairtax.org. I have several columns I’ve written that address some of your issues.
Quickly though, every legal citizen can register for the prebate and get it. Whether they work or not. The FairTax does not believe you should pay taxes just to live, so all purchases up to the poverty level are “untaxed” via the prebate.
States like NH could either set up their own agency, or have their state taxes collected via the small part of the IRS that would remain. It will be up to the states, but I suspect most will have the monies flow through them.
The FairTax will apply to financial services, so that portion of the stock/bond/annuity/insurance purchases associated with the service will be taxed. On a 5% loan, for instance, it would increase the loan rate to 5.04%. (Don’t hold be too tight on that since it depends on a several factors. )
Insurance, the service portion, is subject to tax, but the benefits are untaxed by including a payment for all taxes to be paid.

Discriminate between earned (SS, medicare, pensions, etc.) and unearned (Medicaid, food stamps, etc.) entitlements and curtail or eliminate the latter along with both DoEs, DoC, DOL, HUD and funding for Iraq and Afghanistan and you’re there.

The Balanced Budget Amendment that was voted on did not have spending caps, or spending cuts. In effect this means that the only way to balance budget is to increase taxes. Congress will not cut spending we’ve seen that. So all this does is force future Republicans to vote for more taxes because now they are forced to by the Constitution. I applaud that Ryan did not vote for the bill.

If Congress was required to Tax as much as they wanted to spend, there would be a natural limit on the size of the federal government. The Pain of a tax increase would effect the tax payers at the same time as the Pleasure of a spending increase. There would (should) be a balance. Currently spending does not need to be supported by taxes, only debt. And the Pain of the Debt is incurred by future taxpayers, who do not vote in current elections.
The Cap on spending in only wanted as a scapegoat so the BBA can fail.
So Ryan, by not putting a limit on congress, is voting for the current model of unlimited congression spending power, unfettered by the need to pay back the debt.

The “secret” to eliminating the National Debt is to increase the economy substantially. The only proposal out there that will do that is the FairTax.
Under the FairTax, the economy would see a 10% increase the first year, and average 5% to 7% for the following decade. If spending is held constant (a big IF I admit), the budget surpluses generated by the FairTax could pay down the National Debt by 2020. If we could get Congress to return to 2008 levels, the ND would be paid off a couple of years earlier.All without raising tax rates!!Once you understand the FairTax, you’ll demand it.

The overspending stops with a balanced buget amendment. It would force spending & revenue to be (nearly) equal. The Gain of spending increases would have to be offset by the Pain of tax increaases. The current model is the Pain of tax increases for todays Gain has been shifted to non-voting future tax payers. No other way will work.

Before the internet, college students could do all kinds of crazy stuff and their employers would never know about it. Now – if you’re not careful, such knowledge is a click away. Additionally, the fact is that knowing this people are often savvy enough to know the game and to play it better by creating personas or by making sure that their public face in social media is “employment friendly.” But a video, showing the faces of the urchins who Occupy – that would be very helpful to me as a potential employer. I point out that being hosed down with military grade pepper spray, where the directions say not to use at distances closer than 12 feet is worse than having some frustrated kid throw a water bottle at a woman and not injure her, and then according to you, that makes me a thug.

Most of the violent acts attributed to the OWS movement have either never been confirmed, or have occurred outside the OWS camps.
I do not think we should excuse any assault, but in my mind we need to be addressing the violent ones that are landing people in the hospital first and the ones that cause a little discomfort last.
All the people who were pepper sprayed at UC Davis are in the hospital now, many of them suffering serious burns.

A crowd has a personality and character just as individuals, cities, cultures, and organizations do. They are different from one another according to who they are, what they believe, and what they value. In the same way, the OWS movement and ideology attracts a certain type of people that are now becoming known by what they say and do.
The odious actions of those in the OWS movement are continually added to daily, in spades, all across the nation. This reveals the character of those who are attracted to this ideology.
On the other hand (since the Tea Party has been brought up so often in these threads, although I do not belong to their group) what do you see coming from the news reports from the Tea Party crowds? Perhaps a few altercations at most. But you also see order, respect for property, respect for the safety of others, and respect for our nation, our police, our culture, and our Constitution. That speaks of character, since they too cannot regulate who joins their “crowds”.

I’m not one who puts the Tea party in opposition to OWS. I see them as the two extreme wings of a broad-based American disgust and opposition to the corrupt oligarchy running our country. But since you ask: First, I haven’t heard ANYTHING from the Tea party since they let themselves get co-opted by the GOP. Secondly, you will remember that the worst of the Tea partiers are outright racists. There were many news reports of such incidents. Racism “comes with the territory” in any movement of extreme conservatives.
I’ve closely followed OccupyOakland. I was sometimes hassled in their camp simply for taking photos. There were news stories of much worse incidents. But thugginess comes with the territory in Oakland.
If you read the news reports of Occupy with any sense of objectivity, you have to conclude that the most violent elements involved are the cops. This has certainly been the case at UC Berkeley and UC Davis, both of which exhibited shocking incidents of police overreaction and violence. Would you tar all law enforcement with that broad brush? Some do. Not me. Overreaction and gratuitous violence come with the territory of law enforcement. You punish the individual violators, not the entire organization.
If you label an entire movement by its worst elements, you can sell newspapers that way, so that’s what the media outlets do. But if you seek understanding, you have to try to put extremist behavior in perspective. Not to condone it; but simply to avoid the logical fallacy of judging the whole by the worst of its parts.

The point of the exercise was to do a comparative analysis of two groups with similar structural elements against the same criterion. The police force is not a similar group to either OWS or Tea-Party. However, it can be used as an additional factor to measure the two groups against, since the police were present at the demonstrations and meetings of both groups being discussed.
Your OPINION of racist or fringe factors of either groups are premature and without support, since no comparative data was cited in your response.
The comparative results are determined by viewing the actions of the two crowds against the same criterion: personal property; law enforcement; rule of law; respect of the safety of others, orderliness, public behavior, cleanliness, speech, etc.
The OWS news reports of rape, violence, racist remarks, multiple arrests, clashes with police en masse, violent infighting, public masturbation and defication, destruction of property, drug abuse, prostitution, public obstruction, sexual exposure to minors, ad nauseum, reveals the character and value system of that group. And the sheer number of not only news reports, but singular occurances of the afformentioned behavior, belies the number of those within this movement capable and culpable of these acts. We are not describing a fringe. We are describing the lawless heart of the movement.
Most of these behaviors never occured at all within the Tea-Party movement, and when they did, they were very isolated cases that were reported multiple times by the various news media.
By the way, in answer to your posture that there is a large element of racism in the Tea-Party; it is established fact that the Tea-Party is primarily middle class. I have travelled the world, have been exposed to many cultures and people groups, and from my own knowledge and experience can say unequivocally that the American middle class (in fact, America as a nation) are the most tolerant, non-racist people in the world. If you disagree with that, you don’t get out much.

The tea party seemed to be an extension of protestant Calvinism directed at government fiscal policies. The OWS crowds seem to shaping up to be a a tool (macro) for the administration. I dislike the term useful idiots. The power of propaganda in the digital age cannot be underestimated. The powers of persuasion exerted by President Obama are his best asset. Most of it is great salesmanship. The nebulous angsts expressed by OWS does correlate with remarks by the President in the political blame game. As a CAL alumni, I am not surprised at all that the campus is still populated by homeless, unemployed, drug dealers, rapists, beggars, and the mentally ill. The California Berkeley campus, like all California public colleges and Universities is in decline, is over priced, and its undergraduate education is sub-par. To increase revenue, we need to put people to work who in turn will have fedtax and state tax taken out of their paychecks. To put people to work, we need to incentivize small business by way of tax breaks so that their business can have an environment to prosper and hire more people. Occupy Wall Street protesters should become Wall Street PARTICIPANTS rather than critics. I made that choice about 20 years ago and have never regretted it. I’m certainly no one special, and if I can do it, anyone can. All it takes is a period of sacrifice (for me it was about 18-months), focus, and adherence to a program. If you are lucky enough to be working now, I advise it.

Find a company that has a strong balance sheet (lots of cash with respect to assets), current profitability and that has been profitable for many years, and a board of directors that is nice to shareholders. That last is especially important. What I mean by that is that they pay CURRENT DIVIDENDS. Look for one that has a long history of increasing dividends over many years, that pays between 2-5% annually, that is not paying out more than 50-60% of its current income, and has a reasonably strong cash position (cash to total assets). As a check on yourself, make sure the company has one of the top three financial ratings (A++, A+, or A). You will start increasing your own current revenue stream within 3-months max. I really started noticing it after about three years, and I started by investing only $2,000 every three months.

It takes initial sacrifice. You have to believe that it will work (it will) and don’t worry about the day-to-day, even month-to-month swings in the market. The reason is that you are working on a different level, the dividends that have a long history of increasing, orchestrated by a company that has a long history of increasing their profits to get to that point. It works. Why not JOIN them?

If a regular Joe Shmoe like me can do it, I’ll bet you can, too.

Has the Occupy movement done anything to help the 99%, or to target their actions at the 1% and not the 99%?
So far what I’ve seen are strikes, work shutdowns, harassment, assaults, and other criminal activities all targetting the 99% and none that have any impact on the 1% they claim to be targeting.
Either their aim is amazingly bad, or they’ve been lying and their goal from the start has been to do what they’re doing, attack the 9(%, and leave the 1% untouched.
They’re either lying jerks; or unbelievably incompetent at everything they’ve done. Any guesses which it is?

Commenters are, unsurprisingly, jumping to lots of conclusions. The article does not say that a water bottle was recovered by police, so we only have the victims’ word as to what happened. Perhaps her boyfriend slugged her and she needed to make up an excuse. It’s amazing how many women “walked into a door” or “tripped on the stairs” to cover up for partner abuse. It is odd that the victim refused medical treatment. Unless and until more is known, any jumping to conclusions is plain foolish.

Three days later, Democrats took total control of the 110th Congress.
Now the debt is over $15T, unemployment is over 9%, and federal revenues have fallen to $2.1T.

The protest at UC is about the skyrocketing tuition. It has nothing to do with OWS. Just because someone is walking around with a sign does not mean it has anything to do with OWS.
