The building should have had a fire suppression system like sprinklers to minimize damage. I have some extra toiletries like travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste from the dollar store to donate. Where to donate extra clothes, canned soups and blankets? If only they could occupy someplace nearby and for free….hmmmm.
Hope everyone gets back on their feet soon.
Hey Somebody! I got a great belly-laugh from your “occupy” comment! I’m one of the displaced persons, and before we knew Red Cross was coming, I asked a by-stander, “hey, do you know if any of the Occupy camps is still set up?” Thanks for the comment–I really got a good laugh from that, and I can’t tell you how good that feels! Humor helps keep us going.
My regards to our brave Occupy folks! Oh, by the way, I got helpful suggestions from some of the park homeless that night and since. Love it how these situations bring out good things from so many.
Nobody is suggesting that they don’t care about the residents; obviously what happened to them is terrible. But it’s just as callous to dismiss a beloved gathering place like Raleigh’s as “a place you get drunk after football games.” Berkeley doesn’t have many great college bar gathering spots, and Raleigh’s was great. In my short time here, I’ve gotten to know my fellow grad students, worked on group projects, rooted on my friends as they worked through their Tap Club cards, played on a terrible shuffleboard table, and yes, gotten drunk watching football. Multiply my experience by its thousands of patrons and you’re talking about a huge loss to the community. I’m sure the employees and patrons of the other businesses feel the same way.
I love how everyone is concerned about the businesses at the bottom. *sarcasm mode*
Please realize that, not only is your beloved bar gone, but so is a lot of people’s income, and EVERYTHING of the people who lived in the 39 apartments above the businesses. They now have no where to live, no possessions, no clothes, no books, no nothing. Please, stop worrying about where you’re going to go get drunk after the football game.
yeah and do you know how many people that worked in that bar lived in the building or had their entire lives wrapped in that place? it wasnt just a bar, it was home to people. i live in australia now but used to work there and love those guys. hope they are all ok. love to all my raleighs peeps, miss u
Well said Deitra!
No, Raleigh’s and Intermezzo have both been destroyed. The building has been gutted entirely.
