The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory announced in a press release Tuesday that it has pushed back its decision on the location for their second campus to early 2012.
The lab received more than 20 responses when it initially opened the search for a site earlier this year, which they narrowed down to six sites in May, including the Berkeley Aquatic Park in West Berkeley and the Richmond Field Station, a property already owned by the University of California. Originally, the lab planned to make the announcement in late November.
According to the release, Berkeley Lab Director Paul Alivisatos said the lab was “overwhelmed by the positive and extremely thoughtful responses” from the communities considered for the second campus. He added in the press release that the lab needs more time to completely evaluate their options and to confer with stakeholders to “arrive at the best possible decision.”
Alivisatos said in the press release that site would be selected “as soon as we can.”
The lab seeks a second campus that will consolidate existing Berkeley Lab bioscience programs in the East Bay, provide opportunity for future expansion and allow for continued collaboration between the campus and the lab.
