Thursday has been declared a Spare the Air day, making it the second consecutive alert this week.
When a Winter Spare the Air alert has been called, it is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn “wood, firelogs, pellets, or any other solid fuels in your fireplace, woodstove, or other wood-burning device,” according to the Spare the Air website.
The alerts are issued by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District when the concentration of particulate matter in the air could violate state and national health standards.
Wednesday was also designated a Spare the Air day and was the first of the Winter Spare the Air season, which runs from Nov. 1 to Feb. 29. There were four alerts issued during the last winter season, according to the website.
The Spare the Air program was established by the air district in 1991 to encourage behaviors that cut down on pollution.
