Child prostitution investigations in Berkeley drop 40 percent since last year

The Berkeley Police Department has investigated four juvenille prostitution cases this year, marking a 40 percent drop from the seven cases investigated last year, according to a Thursday press release from the department.

This year, two of the four cases the department looked into involved students from Berkeley High School. In 2010, three of the seven did, according to the release. However, none of the cases in either years involved prostitution occuring on the school’s campus.

“While the numbers appear to be low, even one case is too many and BPD and BHS work collaboratively to investigate criminal activity that may occur on campus as well as those that could affect the safety of the student community,” reads the release.
