Saturday has been declared a Spare the Air day, marking the fourth day this week that an air alert has been issued.
A Winter Spare the Air Day means that it is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood indoors or outdoors because the air quality could otherwise violate national state and health standards. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District — which created the Spare the Air day program in 1991 — has issued alerts every day this week starting with Wednesday.
This brings the number of Spare the Air alerts called this winter season — which runs from Nov. 1 to Feb. 29 — to four, which is the same number of alerts that were issued during the whole of last year’s season.
