The widely debated issue of police use of force during recent protests at UC Berkeley and UC Davis will be brought to a joint legislative hearing in Sacramento Wednesday morning.
UC President Mark Yudof and UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi are among officials expected to testify at the hearing, which will cover nonviolent protests and use of force rules. The hearing is being held at the request of state Assemblymember and Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee Marty Block, D-San Diego, and state Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach.
“It is the responsibility of the university to provide a safe environment for our students to learn and participate in activities on campus,” Block said in a statement. “It is also the responsibility of the university to foster a climate that promotes free expression of ideas on campus. We as the legislature must ensure that the proper procedures are in place to protect both campus safety and student free speech.”
Other higher education officials, including the presidents of the UC and CSU students’ associations, are also slated to speak.

Why do Lowenthal and Block have to say this? Evreyone, especially a university chancellor, should know this. Has our society become so much dominated by the 1% and headed toward repressive fascism that facts like this are no longer self-evident?
