2012 update: women’s swim

Fall Season Recap

Halfway through its season and entering its final home meet, the No. 2 Cal women’s swim team sits atop the Pac-12 with a satisfying 3-0 record. The Bears (3-0, 3-0 Pac-12) defeated Oregon State, Utah and Washington State at the beginning of the season before competing in several individual and team invitationals, of which they won one.

Cal finished first at the Arena Invitational held Nov. 17-19 in Long Beach, Calif., and also had a first place finisher in Kahley Rowell at the Wildcat Diving Invitational. The Bears also finished sixth at the AT&T Winter Championships in Atlanta, Ga., at the start of December and came in second place at the Georgia Fall Invitational that same weekend in Athens, Ga.

Break Time

During its one-month winter break, the team took a practice trip to Hawaii for 10 days to get on the same page and practice together before the toughest part of the season. Cal faces one of the most formidable opponents in the whole country in a matchup that has gained much national attention when it hosts No. 5 Arizona this Friday in its first dual meet of the spring.

Return to the Water

This weekend marks the last time the Bears will play at home this season when they face the ‘Cats (8-1, 2-1 Pac-12) on Friday and No. 24 Arizona State (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) on Saturday. The team looks to carry its earlier success into the new semester as the competition stiffens and the road to another national title moves away from home.
