Riverside faculty member dismissed

The UC Board of Regents voted to dismiss a UC Riverside faculty member in a closed session meeting Wednesday, according to a statement provided Thursday by UC spokesperson Dianne Klein.

Though the meeting agenda item referencing the decision leaves the professor unnamed, the Los Angeles Times names the faculty member as Sarkis Joseph Khoury, a tenured international finance professor. The university contends that Khoury violated UC policy by receiving pay from other universities while on sabbatical, according to court documents.

The vote marks the last step in the university’s internal procedures for dismissing a tenured faculty member.

“The authority to dismiss tenured faculty resides exclusively in the board, upon recommendation by the president and the chancellor of the campus where the faculty member is appointed,” the statement reads. “The policy establishes a pre-dismissal review process designed to ensure fairness to the faculty member culminating with deliberation and vote by the regents.”

Klein declined to comment on the specifics of the UC’s case against Khoury due to privacy reasons.

Contention between Khoury and the university began in 1995, when a former UC Riverside dean charged Khoury with violating the campus’ sabbatical policy, and the conflict continued when the regents filed a lawsuit against Khoury in 2007 alleging that he had received income on sabbatical from three different universities, according to court documents.
