Car chase ends in crash at Berkeley intersection

A car chase involving Oakland and Berkeley police Tuesday evening resulted in a crash, damaging four cars and injuring one person, according to police.

Berkeley Police Department officers responded to a request from Oakland Police Department at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday for assistance in a car pursuit that was heading toward Berkeley, according to an email from Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss sent Wednesday afternoon.

The Berkeley officers met the pursuit at the intersection of Shattuck and Ashby avenues and received information that there was an armed occupant in the car the police were chasing, the email said.

Within a minute of entering Berkeley city limits, the suspect car was involved in a collision at Shattuck and Russell Street, damaging four cars near that intersection, according to Kusmiss. A community member in one of the cars in the collision suffered minor injuries but did not want medical attention at the scene, according to the email.

Berkeley Police Department’s traffic bureau is handling the ongoing collision investigation, and Oakland Police Department is handling the criminal case. BPD personnel on the scene were told that two suspects were arrested by the Oakland officers. All four cars were towed for moderate to major damage, the email said.
