Records are made to be broken. Every sports fan knows that the chase for these records is one of the most exciting parts of cheering on your favorite teams and players.

The Cal men’s golf team is chasing a record of its own. After a win last week at the John A. Burns intercollegiate tournament in Hawaii, coach Steve Desimone’s team is in pursuit of a record that it has been unable to break in the past two seasons.

For the third straight year, the team has tied the school record with three tournament wins.

The Bears will begin the quest to conquer the record next week in Long Beach, Calif. The Del Walker Match Play tournament at the Virginia Country Club will run Monday and Tuesday, after the team arrives Saturday and plays a practice round Sunday.

Including the Del Walker Match Play tournament, the Bears have six tournaments with which they can break the record.

After 33 years as the golf coach, breaking the record could be one of the proudest moments for Desimone.
