The Barber of Birmingham, directed by Berkeley-based filmmaker Gail Dolgin, could take home an Oscar at Sunday’s Academy Award ceremony.

The film, which examines the effect of Barack Obama’s election on aging civil rights activists, is nominated under the category of best documentary short subject. The 25-minute film centers around James Armstrong, “a “foot soldier” and a dreamer whose barbershop in Birmingham, Alabama has been a hub for haircuts and civil rights since 1955,” according to the film’s website.

After Dolgin died in October 2010 while working on the film, co-director and producer Robin Fryday completed its production with funding from the Berkeley Film Foundation.

The 84th Academy Awards will be broadcast Sunday.

Annie Sciacca covers city government.
