A man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of battering a woman at People’s Park earlier in the week, according to police.
A female — who is not a UC Berkeley student, police say — was the victim of a battery that caused “great bodily injury” on Thursday in People’s Park and was taken to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, according to the UCPD crime logs.
According to a UCPD crime alert, the victim later told police that she was standing with a group at the southeast corner of the park when a man approached the group and started swearing at everyone. When the victim stood up and told the man to leave, he allegedly hit the victim multiple times in the face, causing her to lose consciousness.
At approximately 10:45 a.m. Saturday, UCPD arrested William Brewer for allegedly committing the battery, according to UCPD spokesperson Lt. Eric Tejada.
Brewer is being held at Santa Rita Jail on bail for $50,000, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office website. He has an arraignment scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
Tejada has said before that People’s Park requires a “good deal of (UCPD’s) time and attention.”
In 2011, UCPD was contacted 29 times for battery-related calls, 37 times for disturbance calls and four times for calls relating to assault with a deadly weapon in the park, according to Tejada.

Blame the gutless university for not having the cajones to get rid of this cancer of a so-called “park.” And while you are at it, blame Councilman Kris Worthington for helping perpetuate this monstrosity. Finally, culpability lies in our fellow citizens for not demanding that their elected officials stop sucking off the few loudmouthed idiots left who support this toxic spawning ground for scum…
People’s Park needs to be burned to the ground.
I graduated from Cal in 1986 and People’s Park was a crime magnet then. I can’t believe Berkeley still hasn’t built a parking lot on that site.
It’s indicative of the piss-poor politics of the city, and the University itself. The incompetence is astounding.
The University shares culpability for every crime committed by a resident of People’s Park.
Napalm B; it is the only way to end the problems in Parasite’s Park.
Not sure about how your ethics are doing, but I prefer comprehensive mental healthcare and housing…
Berkeley has a SHITLOAD of mental health care and we can’t house and care for everyone in the country who flocks here. How do you propose we IMMEDIATELY deal with the problem, which is a drastic one?
