UC Berkeley student found dead in Manville Apartments

A student was found dead Feb. 26 in UC Berkeley apartments on Southside, although the cause of death remains unknown.

A little after 9 p.m. last Sunday, UCPD found the deceased UC Berkeley male graduate student at Manville Apartments at 2100 Channing Way after receiving reports from friends that evening that he had gone missing, according to UCPD spokesperson Lt. Eric Tejada.

“At this point, it does not appear to be any signs of foul play,” Tejada said.

Tejada confirmed Monday that the student was Arthur Qi, a graduate student in the Haas School of Business, who the business school reported had died that weekend also.

In October, another male graduate student was found dead at Manville Apartments after the student’s brother contacted UCPD to perform a welfare check after he could not contact him for a few days. The cause of death in last year’s case was a medical condition, Tejada said.

Tejada said the department is investigating last week’s incident, including the similarities between the two cases.

“In the face of it it, doesn’t look like there’s any connection at all,” Tejada said.

Can we agree to wait until more information is released about the deceased student before throwing around wild allegations?

Um… except for the fact that they occurred at the same location.
    My guess: carbon monoxide poisoning.

Or maybe there’s been a rash of suicides on/near campus and UC is desperately trying to pretend that this never happens here b/c they’ve sold the parents an incredible line of bullshit for so many, many years.
(your kids are safe w/us at the UC, we promise!)

Your guess of CO poisoning is extremely unlikely and entirely unsubstantiated.

Further, the two scenarios you present are contradictory. Is the university covering-up shoddy construction, or are they being dishonest about their approach to mental health?  You can’t have it both ways.

Finally, what does Berkeley’s message to parents of undergrads have to do with the death of a graduate student?
