A graduate student in the Haas School of Business died unexpectedly over the weekend, officials say.
Arthur Qi, who was a student in the Berkeley-Haas Master’s of Financial Engineering Program, was found dead in his home, according to Ute Frey, associate director of marketing and communications at the business school.
Qi was a Chinese national who was attending Haas on an international student visa, according to a media release from Haas posted Monday. Qi was set to graduate from his program March 16, according to the release.
“He was a gentle soul, kind and extremely polite, and always smiling,” said Linda Kreitzman, executive director of the financial engineering master’s program, in the release.
Qi’s classmates alerted authorities after he missed a group lunch and had not been seen all weekend, according to the release.
Frey said Tuesday the cause of Qi’s death has yet to be determined.
UCPD reported that a male graduate student was found dead Sunday in his home at the campus-owned Manville Apartments on Southside. UCPD spokesperson Lt. Eric Tejada has confirmed that the student found in the apartments was Qi.
