Three Cal players receive Pac-12 honors

The Cal women’s basketball team didn’t haul in any major honors in this year’s Pac-12 awards.

Player of the Year went to Stanford’s unstoppable Nnemkadi Ogwumike, while Washington’s Jazmine Davis nabbed Freshman of the Year. Ogwumike’s sister Chiney was Defensive Player of the Year, and her coach, Tara VanDerveer took home Coach of the Year.

However, three Bears were named to the all-conference teams.

Junior co-captain Layshia Clarendon, who leads the team in points with an average of 12.5 per game, was  named to the All-Pac-12 team. First-year players Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray were both named to the All-Freshman team. Both athletes average at least 10 points per game (Gray gets 10.3). Boyd has started in all but one game (the first) this season, while Gray has been a formidable sub for junior big Talia Caldwell in numerous games.

So overall, not too shabby a showing for a team with a first-year head coach and a roster devoid of a single senior.

The Bears will challenge conference foes in this weekend’s Pac-12 Tournament in Los Angeles. With the No. 2 seed Cal received a first-round bye and will being competition on Thursday at 5 p.m. against the winner of the Utah-Colorado tilt.
