The Cal men’s swim team isn’t big on individual accolades, but it’s safe to say no other Bear had a more fruitful weekend than junior Tom Shields.

The six-time NCAA Champion won four events at last week’s Pac-12 Championships — two individual events (100 and 200 fly) and two relays (200 medley and 400 free). Shields has now won 11 Pac-12 Championships in his three years at Cal.

The junior also competed in two other relays, the 800 free and 400 medley, in which Cal finished third and second, respectively. In each event, Shields had the fastest time in his leg.

The only swimmer who managed to defeat Shields over the weekend was Stanford freshman David Nolan, who edged Shields by 0.24 seconds in the 100 back. However, Shields was NCAA Champion in the event last year.

Shields qualified for NCAAs in each of his seven Pac-12 events, five in which he has already won a national championship.
