For the first time since 2009, the Cal women’s basketball team has won an NCAA tournament game.
On Sunday morning, the eighth-seeded Bears topped ninth-seeded Iowa, 84-74, at Purcell Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind.
Five different Cal players reached double digits in the game. In particular, junior guard Layshia Clarendon paced the team with 16 points, while freshman guard Brittany Boyd notched 15 points, eight assists and six steals.
At the end of the first half, Cal led by nine points. The team held its comfortable lead for the final period and staved off a late Iowa comeback.
Propelled by back-to-back 3-pointers with a little over a minute left, the Hawkeyes cut Cal’s lead to 74-80. But ensuing trips to the charity stripe from Boyd and Clarendon ensured a Bears victory.
Cal will face the winner of the Notre Dame-Liberty contest on Tuesday.
