Cal women’s swimming and diving wins national championship

The Cal women’s swimming and diving team repeated as national champions on Saturday in Auburn, Ala.

The Bears finished with 412.5 points at Auburn’s James E. Martin Aquatic Center, well ahead of second-place Georgia (366) and third-place USC (325.5). Stanford and Arizona finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the tournament that began on Thursday.

This is Cal’s third national title in four years. The squad won due to a very balanced attack — a diver, Kathy Rowell, clinched the victory. The Bears were led by another strong performance from junior Caitlin Leverenz, who won the 200 breaststroke, setting a school and pool record. Leverenz’s win was one of seven individual or relay titles for Cal.
