This week’s 7 p.m. Tuesday night meeting of the Berkeley City Council is sure to see vigorous discussion on several topics featured on the action calendar.
Two of the items on this week’s agenda involved the city’s Fair Campaign Practices Commission and the upcoming November election. First, the council will hold a public hearing and then decide whether or not to amend the Berkeley Election Reform Act to modify campaign contribution transparency guidelines. The council will also refer a recommendation to the Fair Campaign Practices Commission to investigate prohibiting campaign contributions to local candidates from local developers and contractors.
The passage of the Downtown Area plan will be a huge milestone if everything goes as planned at tomorrow’s meeting. The plan to enhance Berkeley’s downtown area has been a seven-year process that would culminate in Tuesday’s passage of the final implementation measures.
For the last discussion of the night, an item from the Commission on the Status of Women will ask the council to adopt a resolution establishing a nine person task force on sex trafficking. The task force would be charged with combating the sexual exploitation of minors in Berkeley.
