At Wednesday’s ASUC Senate meeting, Executive Director of the UC Student Association Matt Haney will make a guest announcement, and several new bills will be introduced.
Many of the bills move to allocate funds to student groups and events. The bills will be passed on to senate committees that will discuss them before they are considered by the senate as a whole at a future meeting.
A bill in support of justice for Trayyon Martin — an African-American 17-year-old who was killed in Florida — will also be introduced at tonight’s meeting. The bill asks that the ASUC “acknowledges the unfair treatment of people of Color in the US Justice System” and includes sending a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice encouraging the prosecution of Martin’s killer.
Another bill that will be introduced supports a graduation event for AB 540 students. AB 540 allows certain undocumented students to pay in-state tuition. The bill proposes that the graduation for these students be an ASUC-sponsored event and that the ASUC allocate $595.02 to fund the cost.
