Daily Cal student newspaper website ranked among top 14 nationwide

We are proud to announce that The Daily Californian’s website has ranked among the top 14 student newspaper websites for large campuses in the nation, according to results released today.

The Daily Cal is a finalist for the Associated Collegiate Press’s Online Pacemaker Award for 2012 in the category of campuses with more than 20,000 students. Rankings will be announced in November.

The news follows shortly after we learned that the Daily Cal won 22 awards from the California College Media Association (CCMA) and six awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) for coverage in 2011.

These awards included one from CCMA for General Website Excellence (the ranking will be announced April 21) as well as two rankings in the top three for Best Use of Social Media, for which we won first place in 2010.

We completely redesigned our website in May 2011 after a year’s worth of work and have since made numerous additional improvements. Today, for example, we launched an endorsements page for ASUC elections. Dream State, our multimedia project on the Dream Act, won two awards from SPJ and two from CCMA.

Improvements to our website over the last year have been spearheaded by Javier Panzar (our online managing editor), Karoun Kasraie (our online manager) and Persia Salehi (our senior web designer).

The announcement coincides with a 44 percent increase in visits and a 39 percent increase in unique visits this year as compared to last. Our social media presence is also one of the strongest in the nation, with more followers on Facebook and Twitter than almost any other student newspaper.

Dailycal.org was first launched in 1995 as a simple, text-only website and has seen many redesigns since, including one in March 2008.
