The Daily Californian staff was thrilled to hear Friday afternoon that the ASUC Judicial Council ruled in favor of the V.O.I.C.E. Initiative, ending weeks of uncertainty about the future of the newspaper.
The referendum process proved to be a much more taxing battle than we could have foreseen, yet because of the overwhelming support from the student body, we prevailed.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you.
Our staff is incredibly grateful to students, readers, community members and alumni for all of their support throughout the campaign. It is very humbling to see that after 141 years, the Daily Cal is still an important fixture in our community. Because of your continued support we know that the paper will continue to be relevant in no matter what form it exists — print or online.
Still, the V.O.I.C.E. Initiative is just one piece of the puzzle in solving the Daily Cal’s ongoing financial difficulties. We have already taken strides to fill our budget deficit with other revenue initiatives, such as last semester’s sales department restructuring, after which it beat our budget goals for every month, September through April. We also struck a deal with our printer to produce a larger paper with more color that will save us $10,000 annually.
The Daily Cal is continuing to pursue other revenue initiatives and looking to cut costs, all while maintaining a commitment to train students and inform readers of the most important issues affecting our campus and community.
We hope that in the next stages of the fee referendum process we can continue to work with ASUC leaders, the campus and university to ensure the will of the students is properly implemented.
