A hate-related assault occurred Thursday morning at the south exterior of the campus Valley Life Sciences Building.
At 10:49 a.m., two unaffiliated victims, one a white 55-year-old male and the other a white 55-year-old female, were talking on a cellular phone when a suspect approached them and attempted to intimidate the two victims, according to a UCPD crime alert.
The suspect then threatened to beat up and ended the confrontation with a derogatory religious epithet, according to the alert.
No one was injured during this unprovoked confrontation, and UCPD officers responded to the scene but were not able to locate the suspect. The incident is still under investigation.
Below is the UCPD Crime Alert description of the suspects:
“A Hispanic or White male, approximately 20 years of age, light or olive complexion, 5’06” to 5’-08” tall, approximately 140-pounds, stocky build, black hair, brown eyes, wearing a black t-shirt with white writing, dark pants, black shoes, and carrying a red backpack with a silver stripe.”

Well, we know there isn’t any anti-semitism at Cal- so it must be an anti-Islamic hate crime.
What was the religious epithet? Was this also an anti-Christian hate crime ?

If there was a derogatory religious epithet, then it seems probable that the couple were wearing something that associated them with a religion. That most likely eliminates an attack against Christians. The couple would more likely be Jewish or Islamic, and dressed in a way that made the suspect associate them with a religion.
The description of the suspect seems weak. How do you get a stocky guy who only weighs 140lbs and is around 5’8? Seems he would be pretty lean at that height and weight.
