UC Riverside chancellor and UC Berkeley alumnus Timothy White was appointed to the California Student Aid Commission Friday.
The commission — created by the state Legislature in 1955 — is the principle state agency responsible for administering financial aid to California’s public higher education institutions. The agency provides financial aid analysis in partnership with colleges and universities with the goal of making higher education financially accessible to all Californians, according to its website.
White’s appointment is one of 11 made by Gov. Jerry Brown to the commission, all of which are made to “represent segments of the State’s higher education community, students and general public,” according to the commission’s website.
Two of the remaining four appointments are made by the speaker of the state Assembly, and the other two are made by the chair of the Senate Rules Committee.
White, 63, has served as chancellor of UC Riverside since 2008 and is a UC Berkeley alumnus with a doctorate in the physiology of exercise.
Fifteen appointed members sit on the commission in total, including UC Berkeley undergraduate Johnny Garcia Vasquez, who was reappointed in early August.
Two of the governor’s appointments to the commission must be students.
