The UC Board of Regents met Thursday for the last and final day of their September meeting.

Wednesday, talks at the meeting were dominated by discussions around ways to address the UCs current budget shortfall and the additional $375 million shortfall that would hit the UC should Proposition 30, Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax initiative fail at the polls in Nov.

Today, the board Committee on Finance is expected to vote on the terms of the settlement reached with lawyers of students pepper-sprayed by UC Davis police officers last Nov.

Raising the nonresident enrollment cap is not the right solution, long-term or short-term. Aside from ignoring the overarching issues that plague the UC system, there is plenty the Regents can do that would address our immediate budget problems more effectively — WITHOUT jeopardizing the integrity of the University of California.
