An armed robbery took place just north of the UC Berkeley Tang Center Tuesday evening.
The victim was approached by two males at the north exterior wall of the Tang Center, according the a UCPD crime alert released Friday. One suspect grabbed the victim’s laptop and took off running toward Bancroft Way, pointing a handgun at the victim as that suspect ran eastbound on Bancroft. A second suspect ran the opposite way down Bancroft.
The victim, a male whose affiliation to UC Berkeley is unknown, was unharmed in the encounter.
UCPD officers checked the area after the incident, but were unable to locate the suspects.
According the UCPD report, the suspects are described as:
Suspect #1 – a White male, approximately 17-20 years of age, 5’10” in height, 105 pounds, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and a red baseball cap.
Suspect #2 – a White male, approximately 17-20 years of age, 5’04” in height, 180 pounds, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and a black baseball cap.

If the guy is wearing jeans and a hoodie, how would someone come to the conclusion that one of the guys was so thin as to be medically underweight? There would not have been enough visual clues of this person’s body structure to make that guess if the perp was dressed for an autumn night.

It’s hard to distinguish between Anglo, Slavic, Nordic, Greek, Turkish, Arab, Catalan, or Latino men dressed in sweatshirts and baseball caps so most victims of crime can only determine whether the attacker is white, Black, or Asian. In any case, racial profiling is not enough because criminals can come in all colors. Students must not display cell phones, tablets, or laptops in public and should consider bringing decoy wallets with very little cash.

I have never seen any comments that state all crime is committed by black men. The comments usually are due to the Daily Cal’s practice for the past few years of not reporting the race of black or Hispanic perpetrators while reporting as if the crime victim is lying about the crime even having taken place by describing the crime as an “alleged robbery” whenever the perpetrators are black or Hispanic, which is true for an overwhelming majority of .this type of crime in the campus community. With regard to this particular crime, it is odd that it is not listed on the UCPD Crime Alert.

105 pounds and 5’10″ sounds like a guy who is skinny to the point of being malnourished while 5’4″ and 180 pounds is significantly overweight.

Racists on Daily Cal have talked about racially profiling ALL black men and black women because of the missteps of a few.
The philosophy major seems to have a problem putting together a reasoned response. Don’t start talking about profiling, when your topic is whether anyone said that all crime is committed by black men. Nobody said all crime is committed by black men. I always say that blacks commit a larger percentage of the crimes than their population should indicate, but I never say they commit all crime. I warn black readers that this disproportionate amount of crime committed by blacks in the community will cause students to profile. If you don’t want profiling, then work to end the excess number of crimes committed by blacks, and stop dressing in a way that resembles the description of criminals. A black man walking around in a dress shirt and slacks will never be profiled.
Racists like I_h8_disqus refuse to discourage racial profiling. They will instead justify racial profiling against black men and black women who don’t dress a certain society-approved way.
I don’t discourage profiling of any kind. If I am in Oakland, and a bunch of white Hell’s Angels are walking out of a bar, I am not going into that bar. If I am in Berkeley, and I see a couple of black men dressed in their thug life gear, then I am going to avoid them. Until statistics about crime change so that I have no reason to think that either one will commit a crime against me, I will do the smart thing and profile. Society approved looks are based on statistics, and they are a wise way to help eliminate risk. It is stupid to ignore appearance.

We do profile white guys dressed in a way that would indicate they might be trouble. Didn’t you notice my example of the Hell’s Angels? People dress to create an image and an impression, and it is crazy to think you can dress however you want and not have people judge you based on what you wear. Don’t believe me, then you just need to look at every black male who has tried to improve things for blacks. They all wore/wear suits, and they all tell young blacks today to not dress like thugs.

Would you tell a transwoman not to wear a skirt because it would make ignorant transphobes say transphobic things to her? I wouldn’t. She is expressing her identity as a transwoman just like the black man expresses his identity as a black man.
The trans woman wears a skirt, because he is trying to give the impression that he is a woman. I am not telling you not to dress in a way that expresses the particular identity that you want people to see. I am just saying that you shouldn’t get upset when people treat you like the identity you choose. The trans woman will usually be treated like a woman if he looks enough like a woman. I don’t know what you wear, but you will be treated in a way that reflects how you dress. Don’t be upset with people who treat you differently than you want just because of your clothes, because your clothes are the indicator for people about how you want to be treated. Dress in gang culture, and you will be treated like a gang member, and that includes being treated like that by actual gang members. Walk in the wrong area of Oakland with the wrong colored clothes, and you can tell them that they shouldn’t judge you on your clothes and that they are being racist, as they beat you.
Culture is identity. The two cannot be separated. How is it fair to force the young black man to dress like a young white man so that the black man won’t be racially profiled by racists? Why isn’t the white man forced to dress like the black man?

Just like you say, culture is identity. Let’s take race out of this, because white, black, Asian, Latino and every other race of people have various types of dress for several different cultures they identify with. Within every race there is at least one culture that is geared toward a more criminal identity, and there is a type of dress that they follow so that they reflect this identity. People recognize the type of culture a person is trying to follow based on their dress. I agree that no one should die because of what they are wearing, but I don’t agree that people should ignore the fact that a person is trying to portray through their clothes an identity. I wouldn’t have thought about killing a Trayvon Martin, but I might have crossed the street depending on how he was dressed. There is no need to dress like white people. Look at various black men in the public eye, and you can find lots of examples of not dressing in a way that people would interpret as criminal gear. However, if you decide to dress like a 90′s gangsta rapper, then you should expect people to believe the identity you are trying to portray and treat you appropriately.

Anyway, everybody knows that white people commit crimes. But by far, the demographic group most likely to commit crime is black men. That’s simply statistical reality.

To say black men are mostly likely to commit crime BECAUSE OF THEIR RACE is racist. Because of the strong correlation (causation, really) between poverty and crime, minority groups with a large percentage of their population in poverty (generally from past and current racism) are more likely to commit crimes.
The white man’s War on Drugs against the black man and police’s racial profiling of people color (which is supported by racists on this forum) explain why there are more black men and black women in jail.
How is the war on drugs against black men? If they weren’t selling drugs, then they wouldn’t have any issues. And it isn’t the police doing the racial profiling. It is the victims who tell us who robbed them in Berkeley. You need to be a man and accept the fact that there are blacks in jail because of what they did and not because they are innocent victims wrongly imprisoned.

African Americans have been criminalized for decades in the War on Drugs, which is more accurately called the War on Young Black Men.
The nation’s discriminatory drug and sentencing laws are harming the black community more than anything else and should all be overturned. Just look at the sentencing disparities between people who possess powder cocaine and crack. Powder cocaine possessors have sentences ten times heavier than crack possessors. Guess who mostly uses powder cocaine? Poor blacks. Guess who uses crack? Wealthy whites. Fix your white man’s laws and the black community will not be jailed and harassed by the police so much.
