Concert Review: Matt & Kim

It looks like I’m being proven wrong about lackluster crowds with each new show I go to. Matt & Kim’s ecstatic performance last Friday at the Fox Theater was full of dancing, jumping, and screaming from both the crowd and the duo. Opening with the fat synth grooves of “Block After Block” — the lead track on their last album, Sidewalks — the duo quickly dove into a mixture of songs, emphasizing new tracks from Lightning. The roaring crowd-pleaser “Now” fit snugly in between old favorites such as “Good Ol’ Fashioned Nightmare” and lesser known tracks like “Red Paint.”

Barely taking time to breathe in between songs, when the duo did take breaks, it usually involved balloons and confetti being thrown to the raving crowd, or Kim shaking her ass on top of her kick-drum — or on top of the crowd, as per tradition. Matt even had a button on his rig dedicated solely to causing an explosion to roar through the PA, as a mushroom cloud appeared on their backdrop. The only track that the duo decided to slow down on was the keys and harmony track “Ten Dollars I Found.” Besides that slight break, it was an hour and a half whirlwind of glitz and snazzy pop jams.

Closing with the ever-popular “Daylight” and fresh single “Let’s Go,” the duo briefly left the stage before coming back on for the sing-along house closer “Lessons Learned.” As the crowd screamed and stomped the ground begging for one more song from the lively duo, it was apparent that Matt & Kim had won over the crowd in yet another wild, frenzied performance.
