Berkeley Police Department is currently investigating an incident of armed robbery that took place at Mechanics Bank last Wednesday morning.

According to Officer Jennifer Coats, spokesperson for Berkeley Police Department, the suspect allegedly targeted a Mechanics Bank branch located at 1801 Solano Avenue. The suspect entered the bank early in the morning last Wednesday after they had just opened for business. The suspect then allegedly robbed the bank using a handgun, Coats said.

Berkeley police then promptly arrived on the scene shortly after receiving a phone call regarding the bank robbery at 9:26 a.m. The suspect, however, was able to flee from the bank before the police arrived on the scene. The suspect had fled with an undisclosed amount of money from the bank.

The police are currently on the lookout for the suspect. He is described as a black male who is possibly in his late 30s. The suspect is also estimated to be around 6 feet 6 inches in height with a stocky build. He was described as wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt along with a black beanie and a black backpack at the time of the robbery, Officer Coats said.

There were no reports of any injury from the incident. Officer Coats said that the police department is currently unsure as to how the suspect was able to flee the scene.
