UCPD has created a new Special Duty Unit to address safety needs in the near vicinity of the campus.
According to a recent UCPD press release, the Special Duty Unit (SDU) will be comprised of a sergeant and five officers. The unit will be active Wednesday to Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 2 a.m. and will be dedicated to safety in immediate area surrounding the campus, particularly on the south side of campus.
The SDU began on Jan. 7 and will focus on identifying crime trends, the press release states. The SDU collaborates with other local agencies to address “core issues” like underage drinking.
The press release cites a recent operation in which SDU issued 20 citations for furnishing alcohol to minors, two felony arrests for drugs and a parolee at large, and one misdemeanor arrest for a DUI.
