How to be culturally aware this weekend

All the South Asian cultural events seem to be falling into one neat little package this weekend. If you’re in the mood to throw all that homework you have out the window — which we always are; we just have incredible self-restraint — then this is the perfect opportunity to go participate in events so entertaining they’ll give you a plethora of profile-worthy photos.
First comes Holi, the Indian spring festival in which everyone celebrates by throwing around massive amounts of colored powder. We already know tons of students, whether Hindu or not, will flock toward this event. You can join them and spend a few hours throwing color at each other, permanently staining an entire outfit! Free tie-dye, right? People are reckless with all that powdered rainbow stuff, but hey! Risking blindness for the sake of those one-of-a-kind Lucky Charm pictures that everyone Instagrams after the event is totally worth it. And we’re sure you’ll completely understand the cultural implications behind the event instead of just going because it looks like a glorified water fight, right? Of course you will. Note: The Indian Student Association is holding it this Saturday the 15th in the Foothill parking lot.
If you still feel like slacking off even after walking out of Holi looking like the victim of a Skittles factory explosion, then you can check out the next event in the lineup. That same night, Indus will be holding their annual culture show. There’ll be tons of different dances and skits and just performances in general. Go figure, right? You like, totally got some cultural exposure with all the Indian color stuff, so why not throw some Bollywood dancing in the mix?
Saturday sounds great, but it doesn’t stop there. Sunday’s got the Pakistani Student Association‘s annual Urdu Culture Show to round off the madness. They’ll have a live band, dancing, videos and most importantly FOOD. You won’t just have that nifty new profile picture from Holi to boast your international awareness through, but maybe you will have a snapshot eating a samosa for the cover photo as well. Once you’ve impressed all your Indian possibly pre-med friends with your Bollywood know-how, you can impress the Pakistani ones (also pre-med, but possibly engineers as well) with the fact that they speak Urdu and not “Pakistani.” Again, shocking!
If you’ve been feeling hopelessly unaware in the cultural department, this is your time to be educated and then shine! Or at the very least, you now have an explanation for why so many folks from the subcontinent will be heading in the same direction decked out in crazy clothing and paint-splattered faces in the next few days.
