Gorgeous weather, happy prospective students and tons of free food — welcome to Cal Day! Hopefully, most of us got a chance to check out some of the events happening on campus on Saturday. After running around tweeting about all the shenanigans taking place, the Clog’s ready to share what we learned throughout the day.
1. Wear sunscreen. The more the better. We’re constantly amazed at the mystical powers of the Cal Day event planners to conjure up amazing weather for this one day. The sun usually isn’t merciful to us Bay Area folk, who are accustomed to seeing things through a screen of mist and fog. Be sure to lather up next time you decide to spend an entire day out in the sun, or else you’ll be paying for it later, as we here at the Clog have become painfully aware.
2. Wear nondelicate clothes. Sure, we understand that you want to look somewhat presentable for Cal Day. You just picked up a Cal hoodie, and you’re ready to start repping Berkeley. However, we recommend that you bring some clothes that you can really move around in — you never know what kind of awesome Slip ‘N Slides you might come across.
3. Come hungry. How about tacos fresh from the food truck? Delicious frozen custard? Traditional Swedish food plate or barbecued Polish sausages? Fratty hamburgers? Trust us, you want to start out Cal Day with an empty stomach.
4. How old we feel. For those of us who’ve been at Cal for a while, seeing the hordes of excited, prospective students really hammers in the fact that we’re getting older. Were we actually that young and innocent once upon a time? It can’t be.
5. How awesome Cal is. Between running across a guy hanging out at Memorial Glade with a boa constrictor (aptly named Lloyd) around his neck, tuning in to an amazing performance by the Cal String Quartet and checking out the cross-cultural celebrations at International House, there was one thing that really stood out to us: how awesome Cal is and how lucky we are to be here. But we’re sure you already knew that.
