Three-star QB Luke Rubenzer commits to Cal

Sonny Dykes has his first quarterback recruit.

Luke Rubenzer, a three-star recruit out of Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., committed to Cal on Thursday.

The newest Bear is described as a dual threat QB, and many scouts argue that he has more talent than his three-star rating from Rivals.com would indicate.

“I absolutely love Luke,” tweeted Jason Jewell, a recruiting analyst for Scout.com. “Cal gets a proven winner, smart player, makes smart throws, high comp. %, low INTs, can move.”

As a 2014 recruit, Rubenzer will not compete for the job that Zach Kline, Austin Hinder and Jared Goff are currently battling for but could represent Dykes’ plan for the future. Meanwhile, scouts across the country have indicated their approval of the signing since its announcement at around 6:30 p.m.

“#Cal might be getting a steal in QB Luke Rubenzer,” tweeted Adam Gorney, an analyst for Rivals. “Undersized but big arm and great decision maker.”

The worry is that Rubenzer is short for his position; different sources list him as either 5-foot-11 or 6 feet tall. But height is becoming less of a determining factor for quarterbacks, as undersized players like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson have proven by tearing up the National Football League.

While Cal fans will analyze what Rubenzer can bring to Dykes’ “Bear raid” offense in the future, the only thought from the young recruit is one of excitement.

“Can’t describe how excited I am to be a Bear for Coach Dykes!!!!!” Rubenzer tweeted.
