Avery Sebastian, the hard-hitting safety who was expected to lead the Cal football team’s secondary unit, is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Head coach Sonny Dykes said in a press conference Tuesday that Sebastian will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the tendon.
Sebastian was taken out of the Saturday night season debut against Northwestern in the second quarter after injuring his ankle. He was seen on the sidelines in the second half in crutches. The junior had 11 tackles and an interception against the Wildcats.
Because Sebastian has not used his redshirt season, he will have an opportunity to apply for medical waiver to earn back one year of eligibility.
