University of San Francisco professor dies in South Berkeley fire early Tuesday morning

A University of San Francisco professor died in a two-alarm apartment fire in South Berkeley early Tuesday morning, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Andrew Goodwin, 56, was found in his third-floor apartment after a fire broke out at 2431 Oregon St. about 1:40 a.m., according to the Chronicle.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found flames shooting from the roof. Several other residents of the building were evacuated and were not injured, the Chronicle reported.

Goodwin was transported to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, where he died, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s Office. The office declined to comment on the cause of death.

Goodwin was a professor of media studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Francisco, according to the school’s website. He authored a well-known book on music television and cultural theory and has published many articles on the media.
