The University of California reached a tentative agreement with the California Nurses Association on Saturday, reaching a four-year labor contract that now awaits union members’ approval.
Union members will see 4 percent across-the-board salary increases each January for the next four years, as well as additional increases each July through 2017 under the new contract, which, if approved, will run through July 31, 2017. Nurses will also participate in a modified version of the UC system’s new 2013 pension tier system, in which they will contribute 8 percent of their pay toward their pensions starting in January 2014 and 9 percent starting in July 2014.
The tentative contract includes a provision that prohibits the union from striking.
According to a UC press release, the union had planned to strike in sympathy with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees 3299, the labor union representing the largest number of UC service workers, on Nov. 20, but will no longer participate. AFSCME 3299 is striking in response to what it says are the university’s unfair labor practices.
AFSCME 3299 President Kathryn Lybarger said in a statement that she hopes the UC system will afford other unions similar benefits to those awarded to the CNA.
“It is indeed heartening to see UC finally matching CNA’s good faith efforts to reach compromises that are both financially sustainable and honor the Nurses invaluable contributions to UC Hospitals and Health Clinics,” Lybarger said. “We would hope that UC will afford other bargaining units — including the service workers and patient care technical workers represented by AFSCME 3299 — a similar spirit of dignity and respect as our contract negotiations continue.”
