A 23-year-old male UC Berkeley student was assaulted and robbed Monday evening on Upper Sproul Plaza.

The student first encountered two men outside of a restaurant on Telegraph Avenue, according to a UCPD crime alert released Tuesday. The two men chatted with the student and walked with him to campus. The student then pulled out his phone, and one of the men attempted to grab it.

When the student resisted, the two men punched him until he fell to the ground. The men took the student’s phone and fled the area, going north in the direction of Strawberry Creek. The student followed the men but stopped when one of them produced a knife.

The student reported the incident to UCPD about 9:30 p.m. Officers searched the area but did not locate the two men.

According to the UCPD crime alert, the two suspects are described as:

Suspect No. 1 — A black male, 5 feet 8 inches in height, with a light build, wearing black shoes, beige pants and a black sweatshirt.

Suspect No. 2 — A black male, 5 feet 9 inches in height, with a light build, wearing black pants and a gray sweatshirt.
