UC President Janet Napolitano announced a new initiative Thursday to reduce water usage across the UC system.

According to a press release from the UC Office of the President, Napolitano has set a goal for each campus to reduce its per capita water use by 20 percent by 2020.

The announcement comes as California continues to experience one of its driest winters on record. Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to declare a drought emergency Friday, according to the Sacramento Bee.

“The University of California has long been a leader in conservation efforts,” Napolitano said in the press release. “This new 2020 goal complements the university’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative and its broader award-winning sustainability efforts. UC is prepared to play a leadership role in response to California’s current water crisis by demonstrating water sustainability solutions to the rest of the state.”

The 2020 goal will be presented to the UC Board of Regents at its meeting in San Francisco next week.
